Minister calls for urgent solutions to Mulanje Water Challenges

Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Roza Fatch Mbilizi has described it as unacceptable for communities in Mulanje to face water shortages despite the district’s abundant water resources from Mount Mulanje.

Mbilizi made the remarks during an engagement meeting with representatives from the two water boards, the National Water Resources Authority, Mulanje Water Users Association, Mulanje District Council and traditional leaders to discuss the challenges and identify practical solutions held at Hapuwani Village Lodge in Mulanje to discuss the challenges and identify practical solutions.

The Minister said the visit follows complaints from residents, including concerns raised by the Mulanje Water Users Association, over inadequate access to water.

She said the concerns raised by water users were valid, emphasising the need for interventions that would ensure communities in Mulanje also benefit from the district’s water resources.

“As a government, it is our responsibility to listen to the concerns of our people and take action to address the challenges they face,” said Mbilizi.

The Minister expressed hope that meaningful progress would be made towards resolving the water challenges within the next three months, adding that she would return to assess progress and ensure that tangible solutions were delivered.

The Minister also visited Likhubula -Blanytre Water Supply System which draws raw water from the Likhubula River on Mulanje Mountain.
